I’ve always liked the fact that Camens can multitask. Specifically, they make music that is both big and clever. Most artists do one or the other, but that is where the danger lies. Err too far to one side, and you end up with a song that is all style and no substance. Go the other, and you risk being too clever at the expense of accessibility and infectiousness.
But Camens has always deftly juggled the two, resulting in music that has something to say, is relevant and relatable, and is also addictive and energetic.
With Cynical, we find them doing both even better than before. Lyrically, they are honest and open about life, love and relationships, a kitchen sink drama playing in sonic form. And musically, they are on fire, and this song finds them at the most anthemic and incendiary point of their career.
If you feel that indie music has hit a dead end, that perhaps it is still looking to past glories from which to plagiarise or plunder its sound and style, then you need Camens in your life. Songs such as Cynical breathe new life into the genre, and it is about time.
