Well, that was unexpected— that gorgeous crooner-ish sound against a background that runs from minimalist beauty to shimmering, wide-screen cinematics. You don’t hear many bands this brave, this clever, going this much against the flow of fads and fashion any more.
There are reference points, not recent ones and not particularly mainstream (which is a good combination) – Cathal Coughlan’s solo albums, Richard Hawley in general and musically, at least, there is something about the song that means that it would easily have slipped into The Liberty Horse’s small but perfectly formed back catalogue.
A band that evokes such sonic memories is a band that I need to hear more of.
