Alternative rock has become very mainstream. I know that is an oxymoron, but I guess all genres, no matter how reactionary, rebellious, and revolutionary they start, eventually become the thing that the next generation defines themselves in opposition to.

But listening to Dizzy, the second and latest album from Northern Captives, I would say that the genre is fighting back. Across ten songs, they put it back on the map—not just back on the map but marked with the footnote “here be dragons,” so ferocious, edgy, menacing, and mythical is their music. 

When what is now termed classic rock became stale, alternative rock arrived to keep things fresh. Now that that movement is possibly going the same way, a new one has arrived to take over. I don’t know what it is called, but Northern Captives are at the forefront.
