I can’t quite put my finger on it, but Clipping reminds me of so many sounds of my mid-eighties formative years. I’m not saying they sound like the past, but their critical sonic elements remind me of a golden age of pop and indie music.
Anyone who can make a Cure-infused bassline sound as they invented it, sprinkle it with that mix of light and shade that marked New Order’s phoenix-like emergence from the dark flames of Joy Division and whose melancholic vocals set against a wall of upbeat guitar make me want to spend the rest of the day listening to The Power of Dreams. And I just might.
I know that there are a lot of names to drop, but when the names are that iconic, I’m sure they will forgive me.
