If your idea of country music is one of cowboy-booted, fringe-jacketed, Stenson-wearing, Grand Ole Opry guys singing songs about their dog or their pick-up truck or their dog’s pick-up truck, then you probably need a bit of Todd Barrow in your life. He makes the sort of country music that is on nodding terms with rock and is happy to have the occasional beer with Americana. This may be what they call alt-country, but it doesn’t really matter what you call it; just enjoy it.
Jungle Out There takes that country vibe and pumps it with robust guitars, deft licks and infectious grooves. This is country music that spends no small amount of time at the sonic gym.
And as a song, it is also wonderfully refreshing. It is a love song, a song about dedication to and celebration of the love of your life, but far from the slush and sentiment that are often found in such an oeuvre, this is a love song for the modern age, one that acknowledges how tough life is, how much other things get in the way of your plans, how hard it is to find time for each other. Hence the song’s title.
But, of course, it is a jungle out there, and that is what makes such stolen time together all the more special!
