I’m not saying that Verskotzi makes rock music but he certainly reminds us that pop music can be much more than the lowest common denominator collection of unimaginative beats and heard-it-all-before electronic filler. And it is this middle line that he walks so deftly with his latest single, You Again.

He is an analogue man in a sea of digital diversions. He is a traditionalist who understands that even such tried and tested methods as playing actually playing guitars and drums can still result in cutting-edge creativity. His is a world of physical instrumentation where most of his competitors are happy to merely manipulate sonic data.

You Again balances the approach and attitude more closely associated with the rock realm, or at least mainstream music from a time past, with the creation of music filled with pop infectiousness. The results are the best of both worlds: a song that is full of musical authenticity and sonic integrity yet is as addictive as anything found today in the pop and dance mainstream.

Not for him the need to resort to studio gimmicks or guest rappers, dance routines or the clever marketing that often accompanies the style-over-substance also-rans. Verskotzi doesn’t need to play those games. Do you want to know why? Because he is able to make music that has style AND substance. And that is something we haven’t experienced in the more mainstream marketplace for a long, long time.
