If there is a gritty and hard-earned side to a lot of music that comes to us under the broad term Americana, then Lisa Michelle Anderson is found at the opposite end of that spectrum, a place built more of dreamstate sonics and finessed folk, where the rock and roll grooves sit way back in the mix and wheret he country influence is more a felt vibe than a heard reality.

All of this comes to perfect fruition on her latest single, “California Dreamin’. And the clever thing here, one of the many, is that although the smart and melodic bass and the unfussy beats carry the song forward with a vibrant momentum, the hazy harmony, delicacy, and deftness of the melody and vocals that they carry never break the dreamlike spell.

“California Dreamin’” puts a neat twist on that love letter to starting afresh on the Pacific shore, reminding us that it is people, not places, that make our lives richer; shared experiences, not sunsets and sandcastles, that make life special. It is also about the best advertisement you could have for her next album, Spend A Little Time, which is out in a couple of months.

So, once you have tired of giving this great song a spin…and to be fair, that might never happen…then make a mental note to pick up the new album as soon as is humanly possible.
