We’ve all been there. Stuck in a queue of cars. Bumper to bumper. Going nowhere. The bane of the modern commuter age. Yes, we’ve all been there, but most people don’t end up writing a song about it. But one of the advantages of being creative is that you have suitable outlets for your day-to-day frustrations, and Traffic is just such a release for Californian alt-rock-rapper Zachary Campos.
Taken from his album Funky MC, this latest single sees him marry those lyrical frustrations with a neat slice of old-school, punk-infused garage rock grooves. The almost motorik bass and beat groove is the perfect sound for such a song, and echo of the engine noise and traffic hum that sonically sets the scene, leaving the guitar room to grate and groove rhythmically in the middle ground.
At less than a minute, it is less a song in the conventional sense and more a statement, a short, sharp, shockingly relatable sonic salvo and lyrical litany. But if you can get your point across concisely, there is no need to labour the point, I guess.
