Sometimes a song can make an impression on its own; in fact, the main job of any song released as a single is to tease the audience, spread the word, and make the listener want to explore a band’s music further. But adding a video always reveals deeper aspects of a song and helps unlock its true potential. “Sometimes”, the latest release from Inches From Sin, is without doubt one of those occasions.
Taken from the album We Need Love, the track showcases the duo’s ability to drive powerful electric guitars through clever pop-rock-soul textures, creating something that nods to classic rock without becoming overly consumed by the volume and velocity that often turn rock music into a cliché. Robert Brewer and Karen Holloway Brewer understand that rock music can still have plenty of life even when curbing the genre’s more obvious excesses.
But it is the coming together of sound and vision that makes songs like ‘Sometimes’ work their magic. As the music builds its case for love, devotion and intimacy, the accompanying imagery brings such emotions into sharper focus. Images of romance and closeness drift across the screen, giving visual form to the feelings the lyrics contain and express.
Sound can be a powerful medium, but vision is almost always more immediate. Put the two together, and the result is something considerably greater than either could achieve alone. ‘Sometimes,’ in this format, is the very definition of more than the sum of its parts.
Love is, after all, one of the most powerful forces in the world, and it deserves better than the usual clichés of moon-and-June rhymes or shallow teenage sentiment. ‘Sometimes” offers something more mature and celebratory: an audio-visual expression of devotion that stimulates both the ears and the eyes.
