Lynne Taylor Donovan has mastered the art of not only hopping the defensive barricades that separate the various sounds and styles and genres that make up the musical landscape but also the skill of landing squarely on her two feet when she does so, a sure-footedness that allows her to make that genre her natural home.
But when she does, no matter which sonic grounds she finds herself in, the resulting music always has a hint of the country twang that has become her trademark. I guess you can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country sound out of the girl!
The Doctor, her latest single, runs on slightly more rock and roll energies. It has a sort of 80s power ballad vibe (meant in the very best of ways) and is a slow-burning song shot through with staccato guitar salvos and anthemic choruses. But at its heart, you can hear the heels of the cowboy boots click, taste the dust of the land, and feel the firey groove that always seems to spark when the sass and authenticity of country traditions meet the wildness and weight of rock music.
