Carrying on from where Full Circle left off, the aptly entitled Movin’ On continues the career overview (so far) of Lynne Taylor Donovan’s musical journey. Although she is perhaps associated with a country roots sound more than anything else, this second instalment of the planned trilogy shows that she is so much more than that.

Silence Says It All, for example, harks back to the rock ‘n’ roll era pop-roots sound, a lush and lovely song that belies the dark heart of a relationship on the rocks, whilst The Doctor sounds like alt-country being invented and ploughing fresh furrows across the musical landscape before it became just another meaningless, conformist genre.

Am I Dreaming is the sort of sophisticated pop that the likes of Crowded House would have made had they not come up on the Antipodean alt-pop scene and instead started their days in the roadhouses and bars south of the Mason-Dixon line and The Letter, the new single from the album, is heartfelt and imploring, poetic and poised…and poignant…and powerful.

I’m always impressed with the music that Lynne Taylor Donovan sends me, one single at a time. But it takes a retrospective such as this to remind the listener of the consistency and creativity that has marked each turn in her career.

Long may it continue.
