We find ourselves in an interesting time for music. As the potential of AI infiltrates every aspect of our lives, it is in the artistic and creative sphere that battle lines are being drawn. Anything that adds more creativity to the world, some would argue, is a good thing. Others would counter with the idea that nothing that can be made that easily has much lasting value. (Hey? What about Post-It notes or that rubber thing you use for getting a grip on tightly sealed jars and bottle tops?)
As always, the answer is not black and white; striking the balance between human artistry, imagination, and digital assistance is the key. RAYmi by the Pool makes a good argument for this, and the latest single, “RAYmiverse,” with its glorious blend of deft hip-hop, pop punch, and euphoric dance groove, is the sort of song that can only add a smile to a listener’s face and a spring to their step.
Hasn’t pop music, for want of a better term, always been the playground for breaking technology, – The Beatles, the hip-hop innovators, the post-punk synth pioneers, the rave scene technology, and on and on, all changed the musical landscape significantly, so RAYmi by the Pool is in good company indeed.
Pop has always been transitional, driven by short-lived changable fashion, something to be enjoyed in the moment, not put in a museum or the subject of academic debate. “RAYmiverse” is all about the moment – explosive, energetic, euphoric, fun, frantic, and fantastic, deftly built and dramatically delivered, as infectious as a tropical disease, as colourful as a glitter bomb going off under the neon lights of the hottest nightclub in town.
And, after all, if people like the Fab Four or Afrika Bambaataa or The Shamen and a host of other innovators can bend the musical landscape to their will, why not the world’s first AI cat music star?
Why not indeed.
