There are two things I associate with Rob Massard—clever, cosmically inspired artwork and cool, consummate, cross-genre music. And here he is again, with both those elements blazing with his latest album. His glorious artwork might, at first glance, suggest chilled, hippie-ish, ambient New Age music, and while aspects of those are undoubtedly present, Old Soul is certainly more than that.
His music comes from a place where delicate folk music is taken for a spin around the musical landscape, filling its dance card with suitable sounds from all manner of other genres – rock energy, indie cool, classical grace, deft grooves, and sumptuous sonic grandeur, space, and atmosphere, proggy ornateness and poppy infectiousness.
It’s difficult to find much that he hasn’t worked into the album’s DNA, and if it isn’t included, it probably isn’t anything worth worrying about. From the sweeping and orchestral “Arms Around” to the shimmering indie-folk of “Smile in the Sun” and from the cosmic country of “I Am The Sun” to the spoken word play out of “Gratitude” this is an album that is both full of great music and timeless messages of thanks, love, and enlightenment.
