Exciting news from Normal Town! The Dreaming Spires, a five-piece band from Oxfordshire, are set to release the third and final single, ‘Stolen Car’ before the release of their upcoming album, ‘Normal Town’. The album will be available on November 7th through Clubhouse Records.
The single sees the Spires at their most Springsteen-esque, with a tale of life on the wrong side of the tracks with the odds stacked against its protagonist. Robin Bennett shares, “It’s a slightly embellished true story from one of our childhood friends. The car wasn’t actually stolen, but he did try to escape the police in it!”
You could say “Stolen Car” is a darker and more political cousin of the Spires’ anthem “Dusty in Memphis, worn out but still believing the power of rock and roll.
The Dreaming Spires are best known for their distinctive harmonies and roots-infused sound, blending Americana and indie rock. Brothers Robin and Joe Bennett originally formed the indie band Goldrush in the early 2000s, which signed to Virgin Records. Over the past decade, they have toured the world as part of Saint Etienne’s live band and the award-winning Bennett Wilson Poole. Jamie Dawson has drummed for touring US artists such as Annie Keating and Carter Sampson, while Tom Collison plays keys for Danny & the Champions of the World. Nick Fowler has performed with notable artists like Gaz Coombes and Peter Buck.
The album marks the band’s first new music in nearly a decade and explores themes of home, nostalgia, alienation, and the beauty of everyday life. The record blends influences from 60s rock ‘n’ roll, drawing inspiration from bands like The Who, Jeff Lynne, and the Everly Brothers, along with chamber pop accents and a subtle layer of political commentary. It features tracks like “Normalisation” (recently issued as a spontaneous lyric video in response to the right-wing march in London), “21st Century Light Industrial”, and the title track “Normal Town,” which pays homage to their hometown of Didcot, once dubbed “the most normal town in England.”
The Dreaming Spires celebrate their return with this impressive new record and a series of UK tour dates, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter.
