Art often has its roots in the strangest of places and Misophonic’s point of origin goes something like this.

“Can you chew a little quieter please?”

“Excuse me? You’re saying that I’m chewing loudly?“

“No but…”

An argument, a near break-up and a week in the studio putting the idea that the person who you love sometimes having habits that get under your skin into song and video form and Misophonic was born. A mercurial blend of the comedic and the tragic.

We talk about the post modern world, of the fusion of musical styles, of genre hopping and breaking down barriers, well, La Roboka sums up these ideas more succinctly than almost any band I have heard in a long time. It comes as no surprise that this strange blend of post-punk angularity, ultra-modern alt-dance, insanely infectious pop, and quirky outsider vibes is the creation of two people who come from backgrounds slightly away from your average pop artist. Lady K is a classical singer and Robolus is a composer of film scores and it is perhaps this that makes them wonderfully derisive of the pop rule book. And thankfully so.

Mixing operatic vocals with incendiary pop, angular dance grooves with crazy electronica has created something that nods slightly to the past but strides out to a musical future that, up until now at least, was probably not on many people’s radar.

But that is the whole point of exploring new musical pastures, whilst making such wonderfully strange music, you sometimes also find new pathways that take everything forward towards yet undreamt of sonic possibilities. After all the future of pop music doesn’t lie with yet another Beyonce dance routine, repeating the same two lines and 12 producers and writers waiting in the wings. The future lies with strange creatives playing dress up in Berlin nightspots, making oddly brilliant and unpredictable videos to match their music and doing all the things that the music industry tells them is not the way to be successful. So Beyonce vs. La Roboka…if it ever came to that I know which one I want to see leading the next new musical dance.
