I love the self-deprecation that runs through Friends With Boat’s descriptions of themselves. In a world of likes and followers, celebrity and self-adoration, they know what they are: a bunch of long-term friends making the music of their formative years.

But they do themselves a disservice. The punk music they use as reference points might be from a bygone age, but the music they make is the sound of that Punk torch being carried forward. As people, they might spend a bit of time looking over their shoulders and revelling in past glories; as musicians, they are the sound of a forward-thinking unit racing to see what is over the horizon. Anyone who thinks that making music is a young person’s game is sorely mistaken, and here’s the proof.
