Writing in a classic style, the sort of thing you might find at the balladic end of the likes of Billy Joel or Randy Newman, Jacob Castles’ debut single is a delicate and dreamlike affair. Even after the extra instrumentation kicks in, there is something understated yet lush about it.

As debuts go, it shows that in Castles, we have someone who understands music but, more than that, understands what mainstream music needs right now. In a world of brash pop built on dance routines and guest rappers, studio gimmicks and style over substance, it is nice to stumble across something that feels like it is part of a fight back. An atmospheric, fragile and shimmering fight back.
