Finding the balance between rock’s drive and urgency and pop’s infectiousness and energy is something that Cry Red has done brilliantly here on their latest EP, Electric Oceans.

It has all the power of rock music but softened at the edges with synth washes and spaciousness and the pep and sparkle of pop, but done in a way that avoids the chartist cliches and mainstream gimmickry. The result is a triptych of songs that sound like what Don Henley might have come up with in his post-Eagles solo days. And as reference points go, that’s a good one to be likened to, if you ask me. And, if you’ve read this far through this brief review, you kinda did.
