This debut album from Massachusetts trio We Are Space Horses sees the band play with psychedelic and proggy threads, ambient soundscaping, and cinematic grandeur. But whereas most psychedelic music feels sunkissed and full of warmth, and progressive rock is ornate and symphonic, there is something moodier about their music.
Apologia is a showcase of seven tracks that wander through those genres, as well as a few alt-rock moments and strange experimental sonics, but where, given the option, the band seems to turn towards the darker, colder, more shaded corners of those realms. The result is something that feels both totally familiar and yet wonderfully fresh. Buy the album; you’ll love it.
