La Tormenta – Circo (reviewed by Dave Franklin)

The news at the end of last year that Puerto Rican alt-rockers Circo were back in the studio after a thirteen year hiatus certainly set some areas of social media abuzz, and as the lead up to a new album from the Latin Grammy nominated band, La Tormenta is the first in a run of weekly single releases. Adios Hola is a collection of music not only infused with the personal experiences of the individual members since they last worked together but which also soaked up the earthquakes, protests and pandemics which acted as a back drop to the recording process.

It is perhaps a surprise, therefore, that this initial release is such an subdued and soothing slice of music. Understatement is the name of the game, the song often existing just on exquisite washes of keyboards and dynamic vocal deliveries. Is this the calm before the sonic storm? Is this the gentle intoxicant which prepares you for the full blown album to follow? There is only one way to find out, button the meantime La Tormenta is the smooth, sultry and perhaps unexpected first single of a new era, and that is enough for now.
