Thankfully, we are seeing more and more artists using their creative space to appeal to the better angels of the world—music made in response to the dark clouds that are gathering with increasing depth on the horizon. Darrell Kelley, to be fair, has always been at the forefront of such a movement; his music, at it’s most poignant and purposeful is often compared to classic sonic spokespeople such as Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye in terms of content.
Here, he echoes that artist’s sense of solidarity and soulfulness in more modern trappings, and “How Dare You Ignore Their Cries?” is a neat ebb-and-flow of soul sonics and hip-hop groove, cutting-edge indie-dance infectiousness, and modern R&B vibes.
And whereas many around him are making fairly general statements about the rot that is setting in at the heart of our political systems, not just in his US home, here, the lyrics reveal a very specific story, one that is both horrific in nature and which gets to the heart of the betrayal of trust by our political, and let’s not forget, elected, classes.
If you want a song that is full of groove and grace, this is it. If you want a song that shines a light on the controversies and entitlement running through the world’s leadership today, this is also it.
