As we head into the part of the year where bonfires are lit and the spirits of ancient ancestors are said to hang in the air, the review pile is beginning to increasingly filled with songs that address such a spooky time. (If nothing else it is the last bastion between normality and a tsunami of Christmas songs to follow.)
But ahead of those, usually, half-baked seasonal sonics to come, here, Messy Eater cooks up the perfect balance of accessibility and artistry. “Haunted Heart” is a great blend of dark, almost gothic vibes, and pop contagion, it toys with some dark imagery but is musically inviting, it is playful as well as poignant, fun rather than taking itself too seriously, in the same way that, say, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” was regarded as both a killer song and a joyful experience. And like that iconic song, this is also a reminder that we really enjoy frightening ourselves!
Neo-classical sweeps meet forlorn vocals, 80’s pop vibes dance with cutting edge sonics, the dark of the night meets the neon lights of the clubland dance floor, and the songs infectious beats keep things energetic to the point of a sort of shaded euphoria. “Haunted Heart” is the sort of song where 80s darkwavevibes takes root in modern pop or at least an alternative take on Modern pop.
It’s already been a great year for Pete Bott the man behind Messy Eater and with “Haunted Heart” he shows no sign of slowing down creatively. A sprint finish with the end of the year in sight, I’d say so.
