Pop music doesn’t always have to take the easiest route or aim for the lowest common denominator; sometimes, it can embrace the requirements of infectiousness and groove but do so with more than a modicum of class, add a touch of class, elegance and eloquence to the pop form. And that is definitely the case with Fighter, the latest single from Esphyr.

It is a song with all the accessibility of modern pop but none of the usual throwaway qualities, a song for the here and now but seemingly built on the more robust and durable traits of pop’s not-so-distant past.

On the surface, it seems just another song to dance to, sing along with and enjoy when the moment is right, perhaps the soundtrack to a night out. But it is a song inspired by the spirit, strength, patriotism, and adaptability of a generation growing up in a challenging world. That, in itself, is an admirable thing to write about, but when you realise that Esphyr is Ukrainian, the song, its title, and its message take on a much more powerful and poignant role. Fighters indeed.
