Talking To Myself easily made my shortlist of the best singles to have passed under my pen in 2020, a cool, pop-rock belter matching poignancy with infectiousness, dark thoughts with light sonic touches. Everyday Existential Crisis is a very different affair but no less deep.
Floating along on an almost hula groove, albeit one at a fraction of the usual speed and seemingly fractious and fraught, it is a strange and beguiling sound. There is a brilliant juxtaposition here between the delicacy of the music and the depth of the lyricism, a strange blend which feels too light to be taken seriously and lyrically too important to avoid.
But that is what is great about Madeline Rosene, her ability to find the opposites that are so attractive, to forge musical oxymorons, to blend ideas that have no idea sharing the same creative path. And that is what makes her stand head and shoulders above the rest of the modern musical pack.
