Confía –  Gepe ft. Vicentico (reviewed by Dave Franklin)

If a picture paints a thousand words, just imagine how powerful a video can be. In the right hands that is. Too many artists use the medium of the music video just to push the sales of the single in question, but that is, in many ways, a missed opportunity as a video can, and indeed should, be regarded as a piece of art in its own right. It can express more widely the theme of the song, better explain the hidden meaning and perhaps even raise a few questions of its own. And that is what is happening in the video which accompanies this new single from Gepe.

Confía, as the title quite literally suggests is a song exploring trust, it is about how when we find the right people we become more powerful, more united, more human. We are social animals, we need others to lean on and provide the support when others need us. That is at the heart of what it means to be human.

The song is a gorgeous, lilting combination of Cuban and South American vibes, deft guitar work and dance-infused beats. But it is perhaps the video which is as much the talking point, Esteban Bustos dreamlike fantasia, and other worldly odyssey of strange characters dancing through dramatic vistas and urban landscapes to music played by a skeleton band.

What does it all mean? That’s for you to decide.
