If you like the idea of lush, wide-screen, cinematic music made at the point where the richness of folk crashes into the infectiousness of pop and which is all then driven along by controlled rock energy, Steve Savona has precisely what you need.
It’s eleven tracks long, is 12 inches across (well, it would be in the physical music world), and is full of songs that wander the length and breadth of the music spectrum.
Coming into Los Angeles sounds like a poppier version of Neil Young’s more rock and roll excursions, which isn’t a bad way to kick an album off. By the time you get to only the third song in, The Way To Be, with its intensely addictive pop lilt and Latin vibes, you realize that Steve Savona is not a musician content to stay in one musical lane.
She Knows sees him fire off into rock territories, big, brooding, and intense. Find Someone Who Believes comes off like it was found on a Beatles solo album, a less ragged Lennon composition or George Harrison number, and the title track is built out of hushed harmonies, simple guitar rhythms, space, and little else.
Basically Me is a wonderful collection of songs. It’s a collection that covers a lot of ground but is cohesive enough that you can tell they are all the product of the same writer. If you are still looking for a Christmas present for that discerning music fan in your life, you know what to do next!
