The best-laid plans of mice and men, huh? They always seem to go astray, and Tom Wavra knows that all too well. Not only did the usual stuff of life get in the way of the making of this five track offering, but also a tiny incident known as the pandemic; ironically, it took the tragic passing of the session’s producer and keyboard guru James Walsh of Gypsy to give Tom the impetus to finish the record.
But, as they say, good things come to those who wait, and this handful of songs have been worth their long gestation period. That the vibe of the songs immediately put me in mind of iconic singer-songwriters such as Jackson Browne, which makes for a touchstone about as good as you can get, but these are songs that feel as much part of the here-and-now as they resonate with the early seventies singer-songwriter boom.
The title track opens the EP, a country-infused, bluesy meander, but there is also room for more upbeat rock and soul courtesy of State of Mind and Summer in the Delta, a shimmering instrumental that sounds like sunlight dancing on the Mississippi waters.
Five great songs, five songs well worth waiting for, and five reasons to love Tom Wavra.
