It comes as no surprise that an artist who has travelled many countries and traversed a number of music scenes, from busking in the streets of Europe to making music in the heart of New Orleans, has developed a unique sound. Travel, they say, broadens the mind, and “you’re golden” is such an idea made into music.

kies is the sound of modern soul meeting an alternative indie aesthetic, of digital groove meeting old-school jazz, of worlds colliding, but gently and constructively, a blend of delicacy and seduction, of liquid sonics of subtlety and space.

“you’re golden” is also a reminder that songs don’t have to have a definitive version; there is always more to explore. Play the original, and you find it finding its energy in the clever use of late-night, digital beats. Play the Tiny Desk video take (below), and things are more organic and sax-soaked. Dig deeper, and you’ll find the Mississippi River version, a stripped-back, gorgeously chiming piano-and-vocal rendering.

A fantastic song in whichever iteration you experience and a reminder that a song is never finished, not if the artist (or indeed other artists) decide to write new and exciting chapters to keep it moving on.
