There is something wonderfully poignant about the small, personal, nostalgia-infused, and heart-aching/heartwarming story that plays out in this new one from Ava Valianti. So many artists are writing big, global stories about wars, politics, society, and movements, which is, of course, as it should be in these dark times. But “Wishing Well” reminds us that something powerful and enlightening can also be found in the small thoughts or individual stories.
Not only does “Wishing Well” come from the artist’s heart, but it is delivered in the most eloquent of ways, the lyrics flowing, rhyming, and scanning in ways that feel like a poem put to music. Most lyricists would claim that to be the case in their songs, but they are usually just deluding themselves. Here, such a claim, not that Ava is the sort of person that would make such bold assertions, is valid for once.
And by the time you have ebbed and flowed along the gentle acoustic guitar lines with her, she leads us to a place of hope and optimism for the future.
A gorgeous slice of indie-folk, a brilliant set of lyrics, a magnificent voice and a songwriter to look out for.
