Sounding like a coachload of Philly Soul music makers crashed their tour bus through the door of CBGB‘s in about 1976, perhaps the most surprising thing about Leathers is that they are actually a duo from Bristol, a town more associated with Trip hop and post-rock. But geography and genre do not concern them.

What concerns them is the groove. The groove is strong in this latest one, “Whiplash,” but the groove does not make a song, although, admittedly, it is a great place to start. So, to this end, they add staccato sonic spikes courtesy of the Hammond organ and punky vocals to the raw guitar slashes and garage rock beats that lay at its core.

Poised, purposeful yet unpolished, and produced only enough to leave the DIY vibes front and center, this is a short, sharp, and shockingly groovy experience.
