“Waiting For A Call” is one of those songs that keeps you guessing. It moves through many musical moods, gathering sounds and styles around it as it goes so that it evolves unexpectedly and keeps the listener intrigued to see what comes next.
Hazy atmospheres build and part to reveal a staccato groove that could almost be the sound of a hip-hop groove being laid down by a live, analogue band. But then Jonathan Roy‘s voice makes its presence felt, and boy, what a voice – raspy, bluesy, powerful, controlled, emotive, and full of heartache. Gospel harmonies join the throng, and finally, the whole thing is shot through with blues-rock guitar salvos into anthemic awesomeness.
We use terms like emotional rollercoaster and musical journey a lot these days and usually use them wrongly. “Waiting For A Call” is all of that and more. As my first taste of Ray’s music, I have to say that I’m hooked.
Please sir, can I have some more?
