Video of the Day: Undertow – Koalra

In the past, when writing about Koalra and their sound, I have often used reference points from the more underground end of the 90s rock scene. Undertow, however, feels slightly different. Here, the band is unflinchingly moving forward without even the usual, occasional backward glance.

There is nothing wrong with using the sounds garnered from what has gone before to build your signature sound; everyone does it to some degree. Still, Undertow is the sound of the band fixed firmly on where alternative music is going rather than dropping the usual sonic hints about where it has been.

Here, Koalra proves that whilst they are experts at making music that sounds slightly familiar, they are just as deft at writing songs about where things go next.
