This is the fourth time I’ve put pen to paper on behalf of Koalra (well, fingers to keyboard…I’m not a Luddite), and they continue to surprise me. Although they generally have a sound that brings together many genres and styles that first raised their head in the 80s and 90s, grunge, post-punk, college rock, shoegaze, etc., they always find new ways to use those elements to build new and unique takes on their signature style.
Something Fails seems to owe something to more dream pop and shoegaze soundscapes, but as it slowly burns its way forward, it grows in intensity, passing through more scuzzy rock realms and abrasive alternative sounds. A sonic journey in the true sense of the meaning.
