‘Tribute’ is exactly the sort of song the title suggests, and as its dulcet, delicate, and delicious tones kick off, we realize that we are in the sonic territory that Alias Wayne has always done so well.
It is a smooth and serene song, yet deceptively upbeat, the sound seductive and soulful – that brilliant point of juxtaposition and sacred, sonic space where opposites attract, something that he has always balanced brilliantly: that rare ability to perfectly marry groove with grace. But, as I say, anyone following his output shouldn’t be surprised how well he does this sort of thing.
Also, unlike many music makers, he never hesitates to wear his heart unashamedly on his sleeve, and nowhere is that truer than here, as he declares his appreciation and love to the song’s subject.
What is tantalizing, though, is the song’s lyrical resolution, or perhaps lack of it. The song describes a first encounter, a chance taken, and a “short romance,” but never expands on what happens next. It is music of a first moment, but the question tantalizingly hangs over the song – did they end up together, or is this just a ‘tribute’ to someone who, like those cliched ships in the night, passed through his life, making it better for that brief moment?
Either way, whether it is the story of a brief encounter or the first step in an enduring relationship, it is a gorgeous song and a reminder that life is often improved by acting on those go-for-it impulses.
