This new one from Alias Wayne is a timely and timeless song, in both sound and sentiment. Firstly, it sounds like your archetypal late-sixties folk player with an axe to gently grind, yet there is nothing overly nostalgic about its vibe, and it fits nicely into the underground end of modern folk, just where it pushes up against alt-pop.
However, it is the message that serves as a reminder that we never truly learn from our past mistakes. And, just as that sixties coffee shop troubadour would look at the world around them and see nothing to be gained by getting caught up in the political extremes, so the modern pop player can see the same issues in today’s landscape.
Alias Wayne reminds us that, whilst it is okay to be political, to have a cause, and to believe in something, we should never let this consume us. Move too far left or right, and you find yourself entangled in cults or conspiracy theories, dangerous idealism, and illogical conclusions; before long, you find yourself contributing to the entrenchment and anger that modern political thought seems to foster.
No, he says, there is much more to life than this; there is much more happiness and harmony to be found in a more sensible and healthy balance of understanding and ideas, empathy and emotion.
Ain’t that the truth?
