If pulling apart a song to see what is under the hood is your sort of thing, you will find some interesting components providing the engine for “Through and Through,” the latest single from Maya Mendez.
Components such as a hypnotic, raw guitar motif that serves as the song’s central spine, tabla-sounding beats that combine with a lilting, Latin-esque groove to add sonic spice, and an excellent dynamic that wanders between dreamy spaciousness and more driven, R&B energies. But the subtle and supple transition between these two ends of the song’s spectrum means that you hardly notice the creative foot going on and off the gas.
And then, of course, you have Maya Mendez’s splendid vocals, here woven into a blend of the seductive and the slightly melancholy, warm but also vulnerable.
So, where does it sit on the musical map? Who cares. Why bother with sonic geography and pinpointing specific locations when all you should be doing is turning the volume up, swaying around the room, and letting its mellifluous charm wash right over you.
