Just because you are known for playing one instrument doesn’t mean you can’t pursue a parallel career wielding another. Just because you are known for one style of music doesn’t mean that you can’t explore one, even one that sits at the other end of the musical spectrum. And so it is that we find David Benson, the man behind Said Sara, taking time out from drumming for a well-known death metal band and instead pursuing the path of the singer-songwriter. It’s called being a musician.
Then There You Are sees him making some fine, spacious acoustic indie-folk music. The song is built on the complexities of light and shade. There is something both chiming and gently effervescent about it, while it also embraces a darker and more melancholy vibe.
It is a sonic juxtaposition which makes sense when you lean into the music a little deeper and realise that it is a song about recognising the signs and guidance that sometimes appear around us from loved ones who have passed beyond this mortal world. And so, there is a beautiful optimism to be found in this air of sadness, a feeling that although we might be separated by the divisions between the world of the living and what might come next, those people have not entirely gone from our lives. Certain portents and guidance are to be found around us if we only know where to look.
Drumming in heavier bands might be where David Benson makes the biggest sonic impact, but Said Sara is the place where his voice is heard.
