Just when you think that you have an artist figured out, they can always surprise you. In the case of Gary Dranow, when you have constantly been surprised by an artist and reconfigured what it is you think they are all about so many times before, when you thought that there were no more moves to make, this artist can still throw you a sonic curve ball.
As a solo artist, Gary would regularly shatter any assumptions that I had, as a sensitive folk tune followed a foot-on-the-monitor hard rocker, which in turn came on the heels of a country groover and even as the focal point of The Manic Emotions, any assumptions that they were merely an electric blues band would find you way off the mark.
Astralix is the sound of illusions and expectations being smashed to pieces again as Gary teams up with fellow former Manic Emotion, Chris Zoupa, for something even further out from the blues-rock starting point where I first encountered them.
Euphoric EDM might seem a world away from their usual stamping ground, but that is where we find them on The Rhythm Fills My Soul. It’s a song all about one thing…The Groove! Pure and simple. Sure, there’s more to it—riffs crafted with digital finesse, dynamics that take you on a rollercoaster ride, moments of soaring euphoria, heavenly vocals, smooth lulls, infectious energy, and an unstoppable beat. But when you break it down, the groove sits right at the top of the list of the song’s priorities.
This isn’t just music to dance to; it’s music in which to thoroughly lose yourself. It’s a refuge for the sonic escapist, the heartbeat of clubland’s queens and kings. It’s a soundtrack that pauses reality, immersing you in a world where beats and bytes reign supreme.
