Taken from this Memphis R&B trio’s latest EP, Under The Mistletoe, “The Mistletoe” is everything you need from a modern Christmas song, a blend of the soulful and the sassy, the infectious and the astute. The brilliant thing here is that the song ticks all the right boxes for the seasonal single, is full of vibrant imagery and heartfelt thoughts, holiday vibes and thoughts of love; it is also so deftly done that it feels like the sort of pop song that you could be singing along to at any time of year.
Running on a skittering trap-infused beat, it is full of chiming sonics, charming musicality, and just the right amount of understated instrumentation, which allows the intertwining vocals to become the focal point of the song.
With its upbeat energy, simple and loving lyrics, heavenly hooks, and addictive qualities, “The Mistletoe” is certainly a song that gives those other seasonal-pop crossovers a run for their money, even songs such as Mariah Carey’s iconic “All I Want For Christmas is You.”
And with the EP including a gorgeously anthemic, not to mention poignant, ballad, “What Do the Lonely Do At Christmas,” and some cool island vibes thanks to the reggae-pop of Mistletoe, there is certainly a familiar touch of Christmas past to be found in this perfect Christmas present.
