It is fair to say that this ongoing collaboration between Night Wolf and Lois Powell is producing some fantastic results. Not that you would take anything away from either as individual artists, but, as is often the case, the coming together of people from different sonic worlds not only realizes a sound that is more than the sum of its parts but also creates something truly unique.

“The Laws of Life” is the perfect blend of beat and beauty. The former spacious, trip-hop-esque, and down-tempo; the latter found in Powell’s silken vocals, which glide and grace and glow and glimmer, moving from intimate whispers to an operatic crescendo as required.

It is four minutes of unabashed eloquence, spacious yet grooved. And beyond the obvious first sonic impressions, it is those subtle touches, seductive moves, and mellifluous motifs that reward repeated listens and make this something exquisite.

Touches such as the pizzicato strings, the distant voice of a muted trumpet, not to mention the distant voices themselves, the arabesque vibes, the drifting builds, and the subtle fades, the synth washes, and the gentle ebb and flow of dynamic tides.

This latest release underlines the power of collaboration, that such meetings of minds always push each artist into new and exciting realms. And this pairing feels truly exciting.
