This first collaboration between Mitch Michelle and Rob Shinno has produced something rather special. The eponymous The Dark Energy Arcade album shines with incredible sonic blends that span multiple sounds and styles, genres, and eras, echoing something of the past while making music for the future.
Opener, “Love Torn” is the sound of rock music translated for the dance club denizens, a powerful, driving, digital force that packs a punch and calls the listener to dance, demands the listener dance. “Brand New Day” echoes the formative days of new wave, post-punk-pop, when guitars were being replaced with, or at least asked to make space for, the latest synth technologies, and “Stars” is one of those dark and delicious ballads that have the word longevity tattooed across its sonic skin.
And then there are songs like “Move,” an anthemic number built from dance grooves and rock guitar grit; it’s big, it’s clever, it is unavoidable.
So, if this is first collaboration between these two artists has yielded such a greatset of songs, the only question is this: when are they starting work on the next one?
