What would happen if the titular Terrestrial Pulmonate Gastropod Molluscs, that’s snails to you and me, got together and decided to hold their own Olympic Games? It could happen, to be honest; how do we know it doesn’t already take place? What if that snail wandering along the top of the garden wall is actually the front runner (well, maybe not runner, but you know what I mean) of an ongoing mollusc marathon?
So with this in mind, BeaVoys not only explores such a notion lyrically, but he builds a sort of hippy-punk sonic shell around this quite Bonzo Dog Doo Dah-esque scenario. A charging country-rock guitar is warped through gnarly punk vibes; a spacious, spoken-word delivery wanders in and out of strange soundscapes that flit past as if being ushered in by the dial on a shortwave radio. Raw riffs are consumed by psychedelic sonics, 60’s harmonies, and punk attitudes; wild-out; wig-out melodies dance with barrelhouse guitars, the whole thing descends into cacophonous chaos, and the jokes write themselves. (Apparently the organisers are still waiting for snail-mail replies from other countries’ molluscular populations.)
And if that wasn’t enough, the song comes with a longer, even weirder version, but I guess once you have committed to an idea you might as well ride it out to its illogical conclusion! And at just over two minutes, it all happens so fast!
BeaVoy’s has in the past been great at digging into the mysteries of the unniverse, exploring grand philosophies, and asking us to consider new ways of looking at our own existence.
This is not one of those times.
Still, we all have to let off a bit of steam, go a bit silly from time to time…you’d go mad otherwise!
