Although the songs on Speak to Me were written over several years, they took on new meaning following Kathy Sabol‘s life-threatening illness last year. What might once have been personal reflections on faith and uncertainty became something more immediate: an exploration of trust and of finding reassurance when the future suddenly becomes anything but certain.
Speak to Me is an EP full of messages, and these songs of devotion and advocacy for trust in higher authority are further augmented by the fact that each track features a different vocalist, each adding their own sound and sonic personality to the mix. That ever-shifting vocal presence helps the collection remain sonically fluid, giving each piece its own unique flavor while maintaining the overarching sense of a spiritual journey and Sabol’s personal message.
The titular opener is built from gentle piano and a ballad-like intimacy, gradually ebbing and flowing between spacious understatement and more elaborate sonic flourishes. Orchestral textures increasingly surround the song, cocooning, creating, and occasionally cascading.
“Rescue Me” perhaps takes a more stylized route, blending devotional songwriting with something approaching a musical-theatre vibe. Its theme of allowing the mask to fall away and confronting the truth is reflected in the arrangement, which initially builds with measured restraint before exploding into increasingly powerful, rock-infused crescendos.
“Father’s House” occupies a more chamber-pop space, beginning with delicate textures before gradually expanding into something genuinely anthemic. It is a particularly effective example of Sabol’s ability to turn intimate spiritual reflection into music with a much larger emotional canvas.
Closing track “Jigsaw” takes a gentler path, but there is no shortage of scale. Its sweeping arrangement provides a suitably reflective ending, bringing the EP’s themes of faith, uncertainty and surrender to a quiet but emotionally satisfying conclusion.
Speak to Me ultimately feels less like a collection of songs than a record of a journey—one in which faith has been tested, questioned and ultimately rediscovered. Its musical shifts mirror that process, moving between intimacy and grandeur, doubt and reassurance, always searching for the voice at the center of it all.
