There has been a rise in artists using their songs as platforms to say something about the world around us today—from anthems of community spirit to rabble-rousing calls to smash the system. And why not? Having worked hard to find an audience for your music, have something to say when the spotlight falls on you?
“Somebody’s Always Doin’ Something 2 Somebody” has something to say, but it does so via a vague yet profound strand of barroom wisdom, the sort of thing that you might pick up from a mysterious drifter in an out-of-the-way truck stop. (Hence the artist name, I guess.)
And it isn’t just an engaging, singalongable, fist-in-the-air set of lyrics, it’s a killer song too, one built on blends of classic rock and blues, grit and groove, melody and muscle. Guitars fire off searing salvos, barrel house pianos thump away, drums pound, and basses drive everything along brilliantly.
In fact, if an alien landed on this world and said, “Tell me about rock and roll” (although I’m aware that this might not be the first question they would have for us), all you would have to do is play them this beauty. It’s all they need to know, and hopefully, they will fly off around the rest of the universe, spreading the word. (That’s how it would play out in my mind, anyway.)
