It’s a brave choice to turn your back on the traditional structure we find in most albums, the well-trodden path of verse, verse, chorus, verse is tried and tested but what Oxford-based musician Sebastian Reynolds has done on his follow up to his 2017 release (sensibly titled Solo Collective part one) is present the listener with music that often follows no structural pattern at all.

The seven songs on show here play out like an audio version of an artists sketchpad or a chef’s notebook, filled with ideas and musings on what might sound good and what flavours can blend with others to bear different results – music, after all, is often a result of experimentation – and the result is an album for people who demand more from their music than mere catchy melodies and guitar licks.

It’s not immediately accessible, and certainly won’t have a wide appeal but it’s worth a listen. From the calming patience of ‘One Year On’ through the haunting ‘By The Tower, At Nightfall’ to the Sigur Ros-esque ‘Holy Island’ there is much to appreciate and repeat listening brings new rewards.
