In a world where I am to be found daily trying to find something new to say about a bunch of three-chord indie kids or seeking meaning in the bombast and bore of an album made by testosterone-fuelled metallers, it is nice to remember that there are finer things to be found in music. Daniel Kruglov is one of the finer things.

His latest album, Sessions, sees him dancing across his piano keys with great delight, a blend of deft and delicate instrumental pieces which seem to be built partly from skill and partly out of the sheer joy of playing. Sitting somewhere between classical grace and jazz adventurousness, it is music which speaks to the listener through the emotions that these pieces conjure.

Each short musical statement has plenty to say and, without the lyrical component, speaks to each of us differently. Guided only by the track’s titles, the listener can interpret each as best suits their own thoughts and experiences. That is the joy of such beautiful and open instrumental music. It may begin with the composer projecting their ideas, but by the time it is heard, it becomes, for the listener, a personal and intimate, one-way conversation with the universe.
