Honestly, I have no idea what’s going on here. Or, more appropriately, I’m not sure where this fits into the musical landscape, how Sluka even comes up with such musical juxtapositions, for that is what they are, or even where, as a writer, you start to unpick and analyse it. Exciting stuff indeed; I mean, who wants to write about another bunch of Foo Fighters fans who met through a shared love of Foo Fighters and now make music which, you guessed it, sounds more than a little like Foo Fighters?
This is un-second-guessable music, which may or may not be a word, but I have used it for the second time today, so something is going right. It’s not so much that the song becomes hard to define because you don’t recognise any particular genre here. Just the opposite. Saving It All seems to have so many elements, sounds, and styles that you can’t it tie down. It’s a sonic bag of snakes.
It bursts at the seem with jaunty, alt-pop power, classical grace, shrouded ethereality, gothic tones, prog-rock intricacy and beguiling sonics. Amongst other things. Wait, it’s just come to me…imagine if Mercury Rev had written songs for David Bowie, or perhaps David Bowie had written songs for Mercury Rev. Well, this isn’t a million miles away from what that might have sounded like. Still confused? Yeah, me too. Isn’t it brilliant? It’s a shame all music doesn’t have this effect on you.
