Premiere: Try – CeCe Teneal

Try is more than a cool, bubbling, infectious neo-soul-infused pop song. It is all that, of course it is, such is CeCe Teneal’s signature sound but there is something else at work here, something that goes beyond the idea of just something to listen to for fun and entertainment. Although Try readily ticks those boxes, you most appreciate the magic at work here when you get into the song’s lyrical heart.

Beyond the buoyant beats and dexterous digital delights, the deft and spacious sonics and CeCe Teneal’s sensationally soulful voice, within the shimmering pop sheen and the infectious clubland groove, there is a brilliant sentiment at work.

Life doesn’t always work out the way we would like. Sometimes, relationships don’t go the distance, and sometimes, people turn out not to be “the one,” but that doesn’t stop us from looking back at those times with fondness and just a little sense of regret. And it is this sense of nostalgia and perhaps even pathos that runs through the song and, in turn, makes us beg the all-important questions: Can we turn back time? Do we get a second chance? Can we return to the past and put things right?
