Music can be a lot of things. It can be high-brow and ornate; it can be throwaway and of the lowest sonic common denominator. It can make you feel; it can make you think. Sometimes you want something to contemplate; other times, you just need something to groove the night away to. And when you want that, there is no better person to turn to than Ariel Arbisser, and especially her latest single, The Deep.
But just because it is an immediate and infectious tune, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t built with one eye on sophistication. Sure, it is one of those clubland, dancefloor fillers, a pop-dance groover that looks you in the eye and dares you to leave your seat, hit the dancefloor and throw a few shapes. But that isn’t to say that it is a quick, forgettable hit or transient sonic slice. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Built on disco beats and the sort of soulful guitar licks that made Nile Rogers a household name, The Deep is one of those songs that resonate with the succulent sounds of the past while also helping to lead the dance crowd, pied piper-like into a bright new future.
If you didn’t realise that pop can be soulful and seductive and sophisticated all at the same time, that a song couldn’t be infectious yet well crafted, that the dancefloor wouldn’t be able to entertain songs that were both big and clever, pumping and yet poised, groovesome and still graceful, then you need a bit more of Ariel Arbisser in your life, that’s for sure.
