Like all genres, the urban sound constantly moves in opposing directions. Some within its ranks are happy enough to promote the sound and styles of its golden age, revel in the sound of past glories. Conversely, some are more interested in evolving it, allowing it to move with the times and develop new aspects and attitudes.

In many ways, Precision, the new one from Zachary Campos, has a foot in both worlds. On the one hand, he creates his base-line, and indeed a bass line, platform from rock-soul samples and funky grooves, something that is both in keeping with those early pioneers and which, through improvements in technology and small studio creativity, means that music-making is now a more democratic and accessible art form.

And lyrically, too, he strides both worlds, the words and sentiments that run over this sonic landscape harking back to the golden age of the late 80s MC’s in style but doing so with a wonderfully modern, almost emo-infused, but laid-back way.

So, with Precision, we get the best of both worlds—past traditions and modern creativity; urban sounds proliferate with more modern cross-genre inclusions.

That’s how you simultaneously keep the old flame burning and use it to light your way forward into the as-yet-unwritten future of music.
